Indigenous Project

“We would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations, the traditional custodians of the country on which the office of the Victorian Branch of Early Childhood Australia stands.  The decision by the Executive Committee of ECA Victorian Branch to acknowledge prior occupation of the country on occasions such as this is a necessary recognition of our role in the collective work of promoting human rights, social justice and reconciliation in Australia.”

At the ECA 2004 National Council held at Alice Springs, there was considerable discussion of the plight of Aboriginals in Australia and in particular the outcomes for Aboriginal children when compared with the rest of the community.  The Council proposed and accepted a statement of respect and commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.  This statement is attached to this Web Site.

ECA made a commitment to actively promote this to all its members in all branches around Australia and encourage them to fulfil it.  The need for this is clearly underpinned by the overwhelming evidence that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children continue to be less healthy and have less positive life chances than other Australian children.

The Victorian Branch took up the challenge and during 2005 and 2006 their Project Officer has been working on their project which has the aims of educating the Victorian members, encouraging them to open their hearts and minds to indigenous people and their issues and welcoming their children into mainstream early childhood services.  A series of articles have been developed during this period and distributed inside the Victorian Branch quarterly newsletter.  These articles are attached to this Web Site.

A further development will be a short article in “Voice”, the National Newsletter early in 2007.
